Spring is right around the corner and that means it is time to strap on your running shoes, go for a walk or better yet, learn to run! Running is becoming one of the few viable exercise options for Canadians over the next couple of weeks. Gyms and recreation centers are either closing or have already closed, and for an active person, the inability to exercise feels terrible. Also, it has been shown that light to moderate activity is good for stress reduction and boosting the immune system–a double win during this challenging time. If you’re a person who’s no longer able to do your sport or activity of choice, you might find yourself considering going for a run for the first time in years.

Whatever your season looks like we have experts from The Running Works located in Guelph, Ontario to teach us some of the basics of getting out there and getting some exercise. In this online clinic, Andrew Canton will offer information that will benefit beginners just trying to get their foot out the door to veteran marathoners looking for some extra guidance.

Here is a quick glance at the topics that will be covered:

  • The benefits of running, how it is a great activity to do alone or socially
  • How to start: run/walk program, not going too far or too fast
  • How to progress and build up your running
  • Equipment needs:
    • Shoes! Types, how to fit, how to choose
    • Clothing
    • Sports bras, socks, etc.
  • Other items
    • Hydration, hat, sunglasses
